This is perhaps the painting closest to my heart in all my work. I have a very deep personal connection to the place in the painting. It is a view of the Tatra village of Ždiar and the Belianske Tatras, dominated by the distinctive peak of Ždiarska Vidla. My father was born in this house, and I spent a good deal of my childhood there, when our family would return to it as a holiday home.
I immensely enjoyed the entire process of creating this painting, from taking photographs at the location, through adjusting the composition and painting, all the way to the final brushstroke. The light breaking through the clouds, the silence of the snowy landscape and the house nestled beneath the mountains evoke in me a sense of peace and coming home. When I look at it, I feel as though time has stopped for a moment and memories of my childhood and the moments spent in this place have returned.
