This painting was created for a lady as the last of a series of four paintings with Asian themes. The theme appealed to me mainly because of its atmosphere – an ancient gate hidden in the greenery, the stairs leading to it, and rays of light filtering through the treetops create a place filled with silence and mystery. From a painter’s point of view, the main challenge was capturing the light coming through the mist and the contrast between the illuminated background and the dark greenery. It is the light that gives the painting its mood – as if inviting a person to climb the steps and discover what lies beyond the gate.
