The idea for this painting came from my desire to portray one of the kings of the Slovak forests – the wolf – in the Tatra wilderness. I admire wolves for their intelligence, their ability to live both in a pack and alone, their endurance, and their ability to remain an almost invisible part of nature. Encountering a wolf in the wild is not easy, and I have never seen the wolf portrayed in this painting in real life.
I depicted him in a dominant position above the landscape below, as if watching over and guarding it. The landscape is based on a view from one of my hikes in the High Tatras. By combining the real landscape with the wolf, I created one of the strongest motifs in my work. To this day, I remember the entire process of painting it, from the first sketches to the final brushstroke.
